ESL 133: Grammar Exam Scores Changed    Posted: Nov 19, 2009
Dear Student(s): Your score on the previous grammar exam was changed by adding four points (or more in one or two cases). Please check your gradebook to see the new score. Thank you for helping me find the error and for your patience! [Also, you can always visit me to see your exams or assignments in detail. I am most happy to do that.] See you soooon, Dr. Fordyce.

Course Description

ESL 133 is a required course in the ESL composition program leading to ESL 141, 151, and English 101. GCC ESL Program

IMPORTANT STUDENT NOTICE: Glendale Community College allows students to take this course for CR/NC (Credit/No Credit). The instructor grades all of your student work as usual, but the final course grade is given as CR if you have a final course of average of 70% or higher. If you do not pass the course, your grade is NC.

What is the advantage of taking the course CR/NC? If your ESL 123 grade was "C" or even "B," ESL 133 can be very difficult to pass. If you do not pass and receive a "D" or "F," your college Grade Point Average can fall. If, however, you do not pass the course with a grade of NC, this does not count in your GPA (your GPA is unchanged by this grade).

What is the disadvantage? There is a limited number of units you can take at GCC for CR/NC. You should save this choice only for the most difficult courses you must take. If your ESL 123 grade was "A," you almost certainly will pass ESL 133. If you receive "CR" instead of a letter grade of "A" or "B," your GPA is not affected (that is, you receive no benefit of your high performance in your GPA, but also there is no harm).

If you decide to take the course CR/NC, you do not need to have the permission or inform the instructor. Instead, you must see your counselor by Friday of the third week of classes, to fill out the request form and turn it in to the Registrar's Office (there is no additional fee). Please discuss this option with your counselor, and good luck in the course whatever your decision.
